What was your favorite Superbowl commercial this year? The Dr. Strange trailer? the Alexa ad with Colin and Scarlett? Push It Flamin’ Hot Doritos? One that stood out to me was the Expedia commercial with Obi Wan Kenobi, I mean Ewan McGregor! The ad begins with Ewan saying, "Stuff, we love stuff. There is some really great stuff out there but I doubt any of us will look back on our lives and think, I wish I would have bought a thinner TV, found a lighter lite beer, or had an even smarter smartphone. Do you think any of us will look back on our lives and regret the things we didn't buy or” Ewan asks as he opens a door to a beautiful beach, “the places that we didn't go?" Well played Ewan, after almost 2 years of travel restrictions many of us have the growing desire to get out and see the world! The commercial is partially echoing a message of Jesus that our lives do not consist in the abundance of our possessions but it falls woefully short with its punchline. . .Life is found in traveling! Instead of consuming goods we are being encouraged to consume great experiences! But the posture is still the same: Crave and Consume!

There is nothing wrong with going on a great trip but Jesus offers us a better way! A way not marked by what we consume but rather what we contribute! The way of Jesus is the way of generosity. Jesus said, It is better to give than to receive. In fact, one of the defining marks of the people of God is generosity! The church is at its best when it is being generous! There is joy and freedom in learning to live with an open heart toward others so how do we cultivate rhythms and practices that foster generosity?

Join us on Sunday as we continue our conversation on developing a Christ-centered Rule of Life! We will also celebrate communion and share an important announcement.
