Sound Doctrine: Defining Christian in a Noisy World

One Church

Let’s be honest—defining the Church in 2025 feels a little like trying to describe your great aunt’s potluck casserole. You know there’s some good stuff in there… but there are also a few mystery ingredients you’re not sure about.

Is the Church a building? A livestream? A political platform? A group text sending "thoughts and prayers"?

For many, church feels confusing or even hurtful. People are walking away, questioning it, or treating it like spiritual Netflix—something to browse for inspiration but not a place to belong.

But before we ditch the Church or deconstruct it beyond recognition, let’s ask a better question:
What kind of Church did Jesus actually intend?

Because He did intend something. The Church wasn’t our idea—it was God’s. It was birthed in the heart of Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and sent into the world with a mission.

The early Christians summed up that vision in a bold, simple statement we still declare today in the Nicene Creed:
"We believe in one, holy, catholic (universal), and apostolic Church."

This isn’t just ancient theology—it’s a living vision of the Church we’re called to become.

This Sunday, we’ll dive into one of the clearest biblical pictures of the Church Jesus intended—found in Ephesians 4:1–13. Together, we’ll discover what it means to be a Church shaped by unity, holiness, and mission. We’ll also celebrate Communion “family style,” as a powerful expression of our shared life in Christ.
