I am a huge fan of the Apple TV+ show Severance. If you are not a fan yet, the premise is quite simple. Show creator Dan Erickson had once wished that he could turn off his mind during a monotonous 8-hour shift (he worked in the basement of a door factory sorting hinges). Erickson was experiencing a strong disconnect from his work life and his personal life. So an escapist question, what if one could disassociate themselves from boring, arduous, or painful experiences?—became the basic plot of Severance. In the show, several characters have severed their work lives from their personal lives through a brain implant. The work self is called an “innie” and the home self is called an “outie”. Neither version has any memories of the other. Intriguing, right?!

I think one reason why the show is so popular is that it’s an experience we can all relate to. Have you ever felt a disconnection from your work life and your personal life. More pointedly, have you ever experienced a disassociation between your life with God and the rest of your life?

I hope you can join us this Sunday as we continue our Compelled by Love series by looking at how to (re)integrate our inner and outer lives with God.

To prepare, spend time in Paul’s prayer for the Church: Ephesians 3:14-21
