There is an inaccurate and shallow understanding of forgiveness floating around the Christian Church that fuels either unforgiveness or a forgiveness that lacks any substance. We know that forgiveness is important but do not know how to forgive one another from our hearts. To forgive people who hurt us is one of the more difficult things to do as a follower of Jesus, and yet it is essential to our ongoing spiritual growth and formation. It is important to know the deeper the wound the longer the process usually takes to forgive.
The Apostle Paul writes, "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone." Yes, but how do we get beyond a superficial forgiveness and learn to forgive from our hearts? What are the key ingredients to practicing forgiveness in a healthy way?
