Those who say that the decision to forgive is simply an act of the will, regardless of the severity of the injustice, do not understand the larger biblical narrative on grief and loss. In order to truly forgive another person from the heart, we must first feel the pain of what was lost and allow God to lead us through the confusing and challenging process of grief. Jesus beautifully models how to grieve well throughout his ministry. We will focus on the compelling picture of Jesus' grieving in the garden of Gethsemane in Matthew 26:36-46 as he prepares to go to the Cross. Our journey of forgiveness requires that we allow the Lord to expand our souls through grief and loss so that we can be open to the new life He brings. Central to our faith is the core truth that through death comes life.
