Are you a Green Light person? A couple weeks ago pastor Rachel introduced a stoplight metaphor to describe the type of people we are and that we interact with. Red Light people have harmful intentions and are dangerous. Yellow Light people are self-centered, lack empathy, deflect responsibility and blame others for their harmful attitudes and actions. Green Light people are open to constructive feedback, express empathy and take responsibility when they have hurt someone. So how do we become Green Light people?

The gateway virtue to becoming a Green Light person is humility. Humility is the ability to face the truth about ourselves and the situations we find ourselves in. Humble people acknowledge and take responsibility for their hurtful attitudes and actions. As we cultivate humility in our lives we learn to be emotionally honest and vulnerable which deepens our relationships and makes reconciliation possible. Jesus is the ultimate example of humility and he perfectly models for us what a life of reconciliation looks like. Remember reconciliation means we disrupt the status quo by overcoming evil with good. A significant reason our relationships are strained and in some cases fractured is a lack of humility. This Sunday we will explore an ancient hymn that summarizes Jesus' unique identity and ministry found in Phippians 2:1-11. We will focus on the steps we can take to learn to lower our defenses and grow in Jesus-shaped humility!
